On Losing Seasons, Bandwagons, Despising My Father*, and Regrettable Facebook Interactions

(Note: This title deserves an asterisk. I don’t despise my father. But read on to understand.)

That’s a big headline. Let’s just dive in.

This year, the 2010-2011 sports season, has left me at a crossroads with my respective sports team. As many know, I live, breathe, and bleed the Browns, Indians, Blue Jackets, and Ohio State football. Of those 4 teams, only one managed a winning season for 2010-2011 (caveat: the Blue Jackets aren’t finished with their season yet but have taken their traditional midseason dive after a great beginning). 3 out of 4 teams. That’s a bad percentage. The Browns haven’t made the playoff since 2002 (their only appearance since their 1999 reincarnation), the Indians since 2007, and the Blue Jackets have exactly one playoff appearance (2008-2009). So recent success? Yes. Sustained success? A definite no.

I have always followed my Cleveland/Ohio teams. I blame my father for this. Being from northeastern Ohio, he grew up on all things Cleveland and passed that down to me.

Now, I don’t have a major geographical tie to Cleveland at all. Nor to Cincinnati. Being from southeastern Ohio, we’re actually closer to Pittsburgh than either of those cities. But, as it always seems to be, you pick up on what your parents interests are and because my dad loves Cleveland, so do I. In giving me my allegiances, he gave me years of heartbreak and a history of defeat. You taught me to stick with something, though, even if it’s just a bad sports team. In most ways, I really appreciate that. Some days, and only when pertaining to sports, it just flat out sucks. But I digress.

Despite the losing seasons and the heartbreaking playoff losses, I remain a loyal follower through and through. So naturally, I am disgusted with those who jump from team to team, from city to city, whatever. Despite these records and continued failures, I stick by my teams. I have never been one to jump on a bandwagon. I wish I had that ability to jump from thing to thing, project to project, even team to team and be happy. But I’m one to see things through. I set my convictions and stand by them.

Recently, though, something bugged me.

A good friend posted an article on Facebook. In it he made a reference to Arkansas beating Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. This isn’t out of the blue for him and I expect it and kind of enjoy it. He and I have always had fun poking fun at each others schools. However another person chimed in with a comment that I couldn’t let pass. We traded posts, arguing about sports. It was revealed that he was a fan of the dreaded Steelers, despite being from Ohio. I’ve never taken kindly to people from Ohio who like the Steelers or Michigan. Have some pride in where you’re from, people.

So, as Steelers fans are wont to do, he started insulting the Browns. I’m used to it by now. I know they’ve been dreadful. This person, though, displayed how little he knew about the Browns (and probably the Steelers) in some of his assertions. Looking back, he probably knows very little about sports in general. But he added his two cents because, hell, that’s what Facebook is for.

This got me thinking about how much time, devotion, and energy I put into my teams. I get riled up, annoyed, and downright angry when someone belittles them. I check box scores and stats daily, win or lose. Some days, I really hate that I;m that way. My emotions vary based on outcomes, I argue with friends, and I stress more than I should about games.

I wouldn’t trade that for anything though. I love my teams, they will always be my teams, and nothing will change that. I may have days when I doubt them, but I always go right back like a lost puppy.

So thanks, Dad, for instilling upon me the right way to be a sports fan and an even better person.

The special effects of Boardwalk Empire. Loved the series and it’s amazing to see how much of this was done using CGI. The set is impressive regardless, but what they add in just puts it over the top!
